Ubhauli Parva

During the Ubhauli festival, people, dressed in traditional kiranti costumes, take part in various cultural activities such as singing, dancing, and feasting.

Ubhauli Festival is one of the most significant festivals celebrated by the Kirat community, particularly among the Rai and Limbu ethnic groups, in Dharan, Nepal. This vibrant festival is observed annually on Baishak Sulka Purnima, coinciding with Buddha Purnima/Buddha Jayanti, during the Nepali month of Baishak (April-May).

The centerpiece of the celebration is the lively Sakela dance, where large groups of people dressed in traditional attire come together to perform in a circle. The dance is led by a male leader, called Silimangpa, and a female leader, known as Silimangma, who guide the participants throughout the performance. The Silli dance movements symbolize various aspects of human life and the deep connection between humans and nature. The festival begins with the Chula (Chulo) puja, a ritual that honors the Chula as the source of food and sustenance, symbolizing the importance of life and nourishment.

Beyond the dance and rituals, the Ubhauli Festival embodies the Kirat community’s respect for nature and their cultural heritage, making it a vital celebration in their annual calendar.
